Magnetic vs vinyl

Magnetic vs Vinyl Van Signs, Which to Choose

Both put your name on the road. One lifts off in seconds, the other stays put and covers more. Here is a straight comparison so you can pick the right one for your van.

The short answer

Removable and flexible, or permanent and full coverage

Magnetics are about coming off cleanly. Vinyl is about staying on and covering more.

Magnetic signs are the quick, flexible option. They sit on clean, flat steel doors and panels, come off in seconds, and move between vehicles, which makes them a favourite for leased vans, personal vehicles used for work now and then, and anyone who wants the branding gone in a hurry.

Vinyl signage is printed film that is applied to the van. It covers far more of the body, from simple lettering to a full wrap, it lasts longer, and it protects the paint underneath. It is the choice when you want a proper, professional finish that stays looking sharp for years.

How to choose

Pick by how you use the van

A quick rule of thumb before you order.

  • Leased or financed van you must hand back clean, choose magnetic or a removable vinyl
  • Owned work van you want to look the part for years, choose vinyl signage or a wrap
  • Personal vehicle used for the odd job, magnetics let you brand it only when you need to
  • Running a fleet, vinyl keeps every van consistent and hard wearing
  • Not sure, tell us how you use the van and we will point you to the cheaper right answer

For a whole fleet, our fleet branding keeps every vehicle matching, and the cost guide explains what drives the price.

Questions

Magnetic vs vinyl, answered

Are magnetic van signs any good

For the right job, yes. They are ideal when you want to take the branding off quickly, for a leased van, a personal vehicle used for work sometimes, or a van you might sell on. They sit on clean, flat steel panels and lift off in seconds. For permanent, full coverage branding, vinyl does more.

Do magnetic signs damage the paint

Not if you look after them. The advice is to take them off now and then, clean both the magnet and the panel, and refit them dry. Left on dirty for months they can trap grit and moisture, so a quick clean keeps the paint underneath in good order.

Will magnetic signs fall off at motorway speed

A well made, correctly sized magnet on a flat steel panel holds well at normal road speeds. They are best on doors and flat sides, not curved or plastic panels, and we size them so they sit securely. If your work is mostly high speed miles, a vinyl sign or wrap is the safer bet.

How long do vinyl van signs last

We print vinyl on Metamark high performance MD5A film, a 7 year polymeric vinyl, so a well looked after vinyl sign or wrap lasts several years in normal UK use. Magnetics tend to have a shorter life because they are handled, moved and stored.

Can I get both

Yes. Plenty of businesses run vinyl signage on the work van and keep a set of magnetics for a second vehicle or the odd job. We can make either, or both, and ship them to you or fit them here.

Not sure which is right for your van

Tell us your vehicle and how you use it, and we will recommend magnetic or vinyl, then give you a clear price for either. We make both, fitted here or shipped to your door.
